From the Designer
Hi, I’m Brett, one of the designers here at Light My Bricks. As someone who has always been fascinated by NASA, space exploration, and aviation, the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft is an absolute dream to light up. The LEGO® set itself is already an incredible display piece, combining the scale of the Boeing 747 with the iconic Space Shuttle Enterprise. My goal with this design was to highlight the aircraft with realistic aviation-inspired lighting, while keeping the installation simple and effective for display.
Lighting Inspiration
The Shuttle Carrier Aircraft is more than just a plane—it’s a piece of history. I wanted the lighting to reflect that significance, drawing inspiration from real-world aviation lighting systems while ensuring the model had presence as a display piece.
The wings were my first priority. At each wingtip, I placed Astro Regular Warm White LEDs under transparent green and red plates to recreate authentic navigation lights. These small details make a big difference in bringing the model to life, echoing the look of a true Boeing 747. The wings also feature landing lights, achieved with more Warm White LEDs hidden beneath transparent 1x1 slopes—another classic aviation touch.
For the body of the aircraft, I used two Astro Large Warm White Spotlights. These are angled to ensure both the plane and the shuttle mounted on its back are illuminated from every angle. This gives the model a commanding glow, whether viewed on a shelf or as part of a larger display.
Finally, I added a Large Warm White Astro Light to illuminate the display plaques. It’s a subtle detail, but it ties the whole presentation together, ensuring that both the build and its story shine.
Feature Highlights
Authentic Aviation Lighting
For me, the standout feature of this design is the navigation and landing lights on the wings. By placing Warm White Astro Lights beneath transparent green, red, and clear LEGO® elements, the model captures the authentic look of a real 747’s lighting system.
These details may be small, but they add a huge amount of realism. The moment the lights are switched on, the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft no longer looks like just a LEGO® model—it feels like a miniature replica of the real aircraft, complete with the glowing signals of a machine built for the skies.
